The selection

by Alexsandra Ferreira Dias

One year ago I took part of two selective shows and I think it wasnot a good experience but it changed some things in my life.
The show is called “Idols” and the point of the show was finding new popular Brazilian singers, and I said for myself “- I want to try, because I’m the best singer”.
The things did not happen the way I liked, although I tried making everything the jury wanted me to do. Of course, I did not pass the test.
How did this event change my life? I was a very arrogant person and when I lost in this selection, I needed to change my personality and now maybe I am a better person in all aspects of my life.

Studying in another country

by Arthur dos Reis, Camilo Mattar Raabe and Vinícius Vieira Dalbem

Studying in another country is always a wonderful and interesting experience. One reason is that you have to learn a whole new different language with its own peculiarities in order to survive. If you cannot speak it decently, you probably are going to have problems to ask for directions and even to study. Moreover, even though this looks scary and discouraging, it is exactly the opposite: to overcome such hindrances is one of the best things you can ever do, because you will dominate a language that you are not proficient in.
Another reason is that it is also a distinct culture. You learn about other people’s beliefs, fears, habits, gestures and their history. You can learn many things by studying it and , by doing that, you can comprehend how they think, which is vital as well. For instance, one gesture in Japan is that if you want to compliment someone, you do not shake hands but you bow. The deeper your reverence is, the greater is your respect for the person. Also, and maybe more important, you will see many facts everywhere of how that country’s culture has influenced the world, who were their grand heroes that made a difference and such.
Finally, we concluded that indeed this would be a terrific experience because we would be learning and studying unknown things. We, humans, have this thirst of obtaining more information and exploring other “worlds” beyond ours. Indeed, there is not something better to do than learning new things every day.

Affirmative action

by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz

The recently adopted Brazilian program for racial quotas in universities is causing a big commotion — and not in a good way. People are very unhappy about the way government has chosen to help socially excluded groups because its strategies sound very partial and truly discriminatory.
The program consists in reserving seats in private and public universities for those who have been historically marginalized by society, such as black and Indian people. By doing that, people who are not included in this group have to face more problems to get into university. One of them is that it gets harder to pass the admission tests because there are fewer places available. Another reason is that not only the favored group has had problems to get good education and better financial conditions — in fact, this is a well-known problem for most of the Brazilian people.
The program also has a very ironic side: it tries to give equal opportunities to every person but it makes discrimination grow indeed. First, it despises those races intellectual capacity. And also, it makes people who are not in the program to feel bad about the others who might get a place that could be theirs.
In conclusion, this measure is not about giving higher education possibilities to everyone, but it only tries to mend a hole of a bigger problem that is Brazil bad social conditions, in which education takes part.

My little friend

by Débora Olivo

When I was in the fourth grade, I had a little friend whose name was Diana. We were very good friends at that time because we studied together, we playedand did cool things. I liked her a lot and she liked me too. Moreover, we were children and then, we never
had being worried with the world's problem.
So, one day Diana did not come to our class and I missed her. After sometime, I was told that she had a serious disease and she could die. I felt bad, but I could not do anything to help her.
After this, she came back our class and we started to live together again, but I always thought that she would die at any moment. Before knowing her I did not value our life, but after this fact in my life, I started to see each day like a beautiful day.
Some time later Diana died but she made me know how good my life is.

Indian culture

by Fernanda Rosário

India has an interesting culture.
One reason is that, in this continent you can find 22 official languages, including Hindi, Tamil and English.
Another thing is that they have several religions there, Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Catholic, etc and they also have to coexist together.
The cuisine of India is extremely different and diverse, they eat a lot of spicy and sweet food, and half of the population is vegetarian because they consider the animals sacred, especially cows.
Finally, the economy of India has increased in the last decade, although they have a lot of poverty there, it is an interesting thing if you compare with Brazil, because we have the same situation of poverty here. However, in India there isn’t a large percentage of violence, then maybe it happens because of their culture that respects the human being first.

How can you help a friend who has weight problems?

by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz and Natália da Silva Matte

First of all, go see a specialist to know if he has a disease and which health problems he could have for being overweight.
You should talk to him privately for him not to feel embarrassed. Mention that you have an important subject to discuss but it is also delicate. Then you could say that you and your friends in common are very worried about his health _do not bring up the appearance issue because he could misunderstand your point and have a bad reaction.
Now it is time for telling him about the things you heard from the doctor and show that he can count on you as a companion on his medical appointments and exercising.

What are the causes of stress?

Following, three articles on what may be the causes of stress.

The capitalist world requires us to work for many hours a day. When we arrive at home, we continue thinking about our job. What we have to do tomorrow, next week, next month. We forget we have a family and friends. We are always running to do all things we suppose we need to do.
So we do not have fun anymore. Only work. We do not see the things around us. Nature, the animals. We do not listen to the sounds around us. The song of the birds. We cannot see the shine of the stars, the shine of the sun. the full moon. We forget to thank God for our life. No, we do not forget, we do not have time.
People suffer from stress because they forget to divide their lives in time of work and time to have fun. The fact is we need to work but we need to remember we have family and friends. We need to reserve a time to speak with our family, another time to go out with friends. We need time to date, and we need time to be alone by ourselves. When we can do this, we can be happier.
by Carolina Berlesi

Nowadays, it seems that the number of stressed people has increased from some years ago. It may be because life is more difficult and competitive than it used to be.
It is not easy to find a job, and when you find it the pay is usually not good. This fact causes a lot of worry, because the cost of living is very high and some people have family depending on them. In women, what commonly causes stress is that they have to work
and at the same time take care of the house and their children. They have too many things to worry about.
Teenagers have stress when they start having to decide about what they will do in the future. It is difficult for them to decide which career to choose so early in life.
There are so many things that causes stress, such as traffic, impolite people, fighting with somebody you love, hearing your boss complaints and many other
things.
In my opinion, what mostly causes stress is lack of money. When you are broke, you cannot do almost anything. You cannot go out to enjoy yourself, as going to the movies, go to parties or traveling. You have to stay home and in my case, that causes me a lot of stress.
Moreover, you cannot buy anything and sometimes you cannot even pay your bills. That causes many worries.
If you have money, most of your problems are solved. In conclusion, worries causes stress, and people who have to struggle more in life usually have more stress then those who have an easier life.
