In our country we are used to seeing children working in exchange of a few coins. This reality is not present only in the big cities. In small towns kids also have to work at a really young age so they can help support their families. But, just because that happens, it does not mean it is right. So at what age should a person start working for pay?
The Brazilian law forbids under-age people to work. They only need to play and study, the other essential things for a good life are the parent’s responsibility, but that is not an excuse to raise spoiled brats. It is important to start teaching from a young age lessons such as the value of money and it is possible to do that through playful ways, after all, who never thought it would be fun to open the “famous” lemonade stand on the sidewalk together with your friends?
As you grow older the amount of responsibilities you have gets bigger. At the age of 16, you almost finished high school, and it is time to choose a career for you to follow. A good way to live the daily situations of a profession is to become a trainee. And if the employer gives financial aid to the students, that will make the experience even richer, because those young learners will have a job that helps to teach how to deal with money.
The critical point in life is when you reach college. If your parents have the money to pay for it, then you will have more time to dedicate to study and possible learning experiences exclusive for students. But if your family can’t afford that, then it is your turn to go to work.
In the end, it is hard to say how old someone must be to start working for pay. But there is one thing you must always keep in mind: money must never be more important than studying.

Journalism or Letras, that’s the question...
by Letícia Cardoso and Lidiana de Moraes
You cannot compare things you do not know, have not tasted or experienced. Thinking about that we decided to make a comparison between two things present in our lives: Journalism and Letras.
What de they have in common? Well, in both colleges you work with the use of words. If you do not like numbers, these courses may be your future, especially if you love to write and read. The personality of their students matches in some aspects also. If you are a shy, private, silent, loner person you may not fit in those areas because they are about communication skills and dealing with people.
But not everything is the same. You can start noticing the differences between the two courses by analyzing again the behavior of their students. In Journalism, the competition is tougher, there is going to be many people who will look at you not as a human being but as a rival. That does not happen as often with the Letras student. Even the most dedicated ones see their fellows as classmates.
The style of the classes is not the same also. Letras is more theoretical, with more classes restricted to the classroom space. Journalism is more about practice, you are not stuck inside the college, you must go out and chase de information in other places outside the University. Maybe that is why some people have the wrong idea that the Journalism students just have fun and do not work.
Another difference we noticed was the profile of the teachers. In some journalistic areas, such as TV and Online, we have really young teachers. In Letras you can see that the teachers are more experienced. That’s probably because the subjects related to Letras need years of study, and the best professionals are the ones with more years in the field. Journalism is not like that because a subject such as Online involves modern technology of information, which is a new matter of study.
So, can we choose which course we like the most? Of course not. We are feeling almost like Hamlet, but our doubt is more like: Journalism or Letras, that’s the question…

Why would a man or woman enter a field that has traditionally been filled by the opposite sex, such as nursing or engineering?
by Vinícius Vieira Dalbem
In my view, people have realized that this superficial tradition is not to be taken so seriously, because, after all, it is just a tradition. Everybody can perform any task of any profession no matter their gender.
For instance, I have watched and read many articles that show women working as truck drivers. This looks and sounds extremely awkard because we seldom see women in trucks, especially driving them, because of the society which had labeled this profession as it may look like “Men only”. Moreover, the articles showed some men and asked their opinions about it. Most of them said that the women are great and do the job very well and also that is nice to have some feminine company for a change.
Another example is, considering only Brazil, the Portuguese and English teacher career. For example, I did not have a single male Portuguese teacher during all my school time. Perhaps the explanation for that scarcity is that people keep saying that teachers don’t have a high salary and that is a profession made for women, which is very wrong again. A man would enter this field because definitely is not a “Women only”, everyone can learn anything if they put effort in it. It is such a beautiful career, to handle your mother language. It should not be scorned.
Finally, as I said in the first paragraph, everybody can perform anything. Men and women wisely have been destroying this old tradition. They are working with what they love to do. Nobody can deny that is the most important thing ever.

How to take care of pot plants
by Alexsandra Ferreira Dias
Pot plants are a great way to give life to a small house or a flat but they need some care. If you follow theses steps, your pot plant can be very beautiful.
Step 1: Look for a place where the pot plant can feel the rays of the morning sun and put the pot plant there;
Step 2: Put a tray under the pot plant for protection and put water on the plant. Be careful! If you put a lot of water on the plant, you will drown the plant.
Step 3: Watch the appearance of the pot plant and if you see some dry leaves, take them off.
Step 4: Put water every three days.
Tip:
Put some sand on the tray around the pot plant, so as to avoid a water pool around the plant. This tip helps us prevent the Dengue mosquito.

How to take care of a carnivorous plant
by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz
The Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is the most common carnivorous plant, probably for its looks (it's got some traps that look like jaws) and because it makes feeding bugs a real show. However, it requires some special attention, for it is a very special kind of plant. Here are some steps for taking care of your little monster:
Step one: Buy a Venus Flytrap that does not look damaged, without a flower and whose traps are opened.
Step two: Add some sphagnum to the top to keep the soil moist.
Step three: Put a small dish under the vase and add some distilled water (or rain water) to it. Keep the dish always full because these plants are big fans of humidity.
Step four: Let it get some sunshine! It just loves it!
Step five: If your plant is not getting bugs on its own, feed it! You can catch some bugs by placing a transparent plastic bag over the bugs, very carefully, so they won’t notice it. Give it one or two living bugs weekly. If you can't give them alive, place the dead bug over a trap and simulate it is moving using a toothpick very carefully. The trap won't close for a still bug.
Tips and Warnings:
-- Buying a Venus Flytrap, or any other carnivorous plant as well, can be a little hard specially if you live in a small city. Many plant shops treat them like a regular plant, selling you an already damaged plant. The best option is to buy it from the Internet; there are some online shops specialized on this kind of plant which delivers it at your home.
-- Do not feed it meat or any other food. Remember it is a plant and feeds only on insects and arachnids.
-- Making the jaws close just for fun is not funny at all to your Venus flytrap! Reopening the traps takes too much energy away, which your plant did not get from any bug, and the plant gets weaker.
-- Do not add any kind of fertilizer to the soil; these plants are used to nitrogen-poor soils and that's why they feed on bugs. Mineral water and water from your sink, that contains chlorine, are bad too.
-- When winter comes, the Venus flytrap have a dormency period. The traps will stay closed as if the plant is resting. After this, a long stem might start growing up to become a flower. Cut it off before the flower is formed or the plant will lose lots of energy for keeping it and the traps won't work anymore.

How to meet a celebrity and not act like a fool
The steps I read about the title above are very clear and they allow us to know exactly what to do and what not to do in front of a famous person.
In order not to create an embarrassing situation, for example, you should make eye contact, give a friendly smile and introduce yourself in a calm manner. If the person responds to you, then you know you are welcome to start a short conversation but do not ask weird questions.
Remember always that famous people are people like us and then, you do not need to be afraid of them but you must know that they are not always in a good mood.
The text I read explains carefully step by step how we should react in front of a famous face and not act like a fool and also, it gives overall tips and warnings about what to do and what not to do and the highest tip is to treat others how you would like to be treated.
Spielberg's films: E.T. and Schindler's List
by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz and Natália da Silva Matte
Steven Spielberg is a very well-known film director from Hollywood. Most of his films are a huge success and are seen by thousands of people all over the world. Two of his very successful films are E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Schindler's List (1993), which share some characteristics but obviously have some contrasts too.
Both are classic films. But unlike E.T., that is a science-fiction film, Schindler's List is realistic and historical, as it tells a true story, dealing with the Nazism in the World War II. On the other hand, E.T. has a light theme that focuses specially on young kids. Although it is from colorful films era, Schindler's List was shot in black and white, which was a director's decision, probably to give a more dramatic atmosphere and to make it look like a film shot at the time of its plot. E.T. not only uses colorful shot but also many visual effects that were truly amazing in the 1980's. And finally, a great similarity is that both movies were a box office hit and won many important awards, entering the cinematography history of Hollywood.

Stand by me
by Letícia Pandolfo Cardoso
“Stand by me”, based on a novel by Stephen King, is a movie about friendship and growing up. It is the story about four boys that hear about a kid killed by a train, and then they decide to cross the city and see the poor boy’s body. During their adventure they cry, they laugh, they have time to be only children, and also men. The four friends are very different one from another, but they complete each other. Chris and Gordie, for instance, don’t seem to have anything in common, but they do. Both are loyal friends, introspective and have strong principles. And both have problems with their families: Chris’ family has a bad reputation where they live, so he is not well accepted there. On the other hand, Gordie’s family had been through a difficult time, because his oldest brother has died and now his parents do not give Gordie the due attention. So, Chris and Gordie are lonely boys. Maybe that is why they became best friends: they needed someone. And the same happened with the other two boys. Just to conclude: this is a beautiful movie, since it gives us hope and a wish of never giving up. The four kids went after death… and they ended up finding life.

The selection
by Alexsandra Ferreira Dias
One year ago I took part of two selective shows and I think it wasnot a good experience but it changed some things in my life.
The show is called “Idols” and the point of the show was finding new popular Brazilian singers, and I said for myself “- I want to try, because I’m the best singer”.
The things did not happen the way I liked, although I tried making everything the jury wanted me to do. Of course, I did not pass the test.
How did this event change my life? I was a very arrogant person and when I lost in this selection, I needed to change my personality and now maybe I am a better person in all aspects of my life.

Studying in another country
by Arthur dos Reis, Camilo Mattar Raabe and Vinícius Vieira Dalbem
Studying in another country is always a wonderful and interesting experience. One reason is that you have to learn a whole new different language with its own peculiarities in order to survive. If you cannot speak it decently, you probably are going to have problems to ask for directions and even to study. Moreover, even though this looks scary and discouraging, it is exactly the opposite: to overcome such hindrances is one of the best things you can ever do, because you will dominate a language that you are not proficient in.
Another reason is that it is also a distinct culture. You learn about other people’s beliefs, fears, habits, gestures and their history. You can learn many things by studying it and , by doing that, you can comprehend how they think, which is vital as well. For instance, one gesture in Japan is that if you want to compliment someone, you do not shake hands but you bow. The deeper your reverence is, the greater is your respect for the person. Also, and maybe more important, you will see many facts everywhere of how that country’s culture has influenced the world, who were their grand heroes that made a difference and such.
Finally, we concluded that indeed this would be a terrific experience because we would be learning and studying unknown things. We, humans, have this thirst of obtaining more information and exploring other “worlds” beyond ours. Indeed, there is not something better to do than learning new things every day.

Affirmative action
by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz
The recently adopted Brazilian program for racial quotas in universities is causing a big commotion — and not in a good way. People are very unhappy about the way government has chosen to help socially excluded groups because its strategies sound very partial and truly discriminatory.
The program consists in reserving seats in private and public universities for those who have been historically marginalized by society, such as black and Indian people. By doing that, people who are not included in this group have to face more problems to get into university. One of them is that it gets harder to pass the admission tests because there are fewer places available. Another reason is that not only the favored group has had problems to get good education and better financial conditions — in fact, this is a well-known problem for most of the Brazilian people.
The program also has a very ironic side: it tries to give equal opportunities to every person but it makes discrimination grow indeed. First, it despises those races intellectual capacity. And also, it makes people who are not in the program to feel bad about the others who might get a place that could be theirs.
In conclusion, this measure is not about giving higher education possibilities to everyone, but it only tries to mend a hole of a bigger problem that is Brazil bad social conditions, in which education takes part.

My little friend
by Débora Olivo
When I was in the fourth grade, I had a little friend whose name was Diana. We were very good friends at that time because we studied together, we playedand did cool things. I liked her a lot and she liked me too. Moreover, we were children and then, we never
had being worried with the world's problem.
So, one day Diana did not come to our class and I missed her. After sometime, I was told that she had a serious disease and she could die. I felt bad, but I could not do anything to help her.
After this, she came back our class and we started to live together again, but I always thought that she would die at any moment. Before knowing her I did not value our life, but after this fact in my life, I started to see each day like a beautiful day.
Some time later Diana died but she made me know how good my life is.

Indian culture
by Fernanda Rosário
India has an interesting culture.
One reason is that, in this continent you can find 22 official languages, including Hindi, Tamil and English.
Another thing is that they have several religions there, Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Catholic, etc and they also have to coexist together.
The cuisine of India is extremely different and diverse, they eat a lot of spicy and sweet food, and half of the population is vegetarian because they consider the animals sacred, especially cows.
Finally, the economy of India has increased in the last decade, although they have a lot of poverty there, it is an interesting thing if you compare with Brazil, because we have the same situation of poverty here. However, in India there isn’t a large percentage of violence, then maybe it happens because of their culture that respects the human being first.

How can you help a friend who has weight problems?
by Elaine Aparecida Queiroz and Natália da Silva Matte
First of all, go see a specialist to know if he has a disease and which health problems he could have for being overweight.
You should talk to him privately for him not to feel embarrassed. Mention that you have an important subject to discuss but it is also delicate. Then you could say that you and your friends in common are very worried about his health _do not bring up the appearance issue because he could misunderstand your point and have a bad reaction.
Now it is time for telling him about the things you heard from the doctor and show that he can count on you as a companion on his medical appointments and exercising.

What are the causes of stress?
Following, three articles on what may be the causes of stress.
The capitalist world requires us to work for many hours a day. When we arrive at home, we continue thinking about our job. What we have to do tomorrow, next week, next month. We forget we have a family and friends. We are always running to do all things we suppose we need to do.
So we do not have fun anymore. Only work. We do not see the things around us. Nature, the animals. We do not listen to the sounds around us. The song of the birds. We cannot see the shine of the stars, the shine of the sun. the full moon. We forget to thank God for our life. No, we do not forget, we do not have time.
People suffer from stress because they forget to divide their lives in time of work and time to have fun. The fact is we need to work but we need to remember we have family and friends. We need to reserve a time to speak with our family, another time to go out with friends. We need time to date, and we need time to be alone by ourselves. When we can do this, we can be happier.

Nowadays, it seems that the number of stressed people has increased from some years ago. It may be because life is more difficult and competitive than it used to be.
It is not easy to find a job, and when you find it the pay is usually not good. This fact causes a lot of worry, because the cost of living is very high and some people have family depending on them. In women, what commonly causes stress is that they have to work
and at the same time take care of the house and their children. They have too many things to worry about.
Teenagers have stress when they start having to decide about what they will do in the future. It is difficult for them to decide which career to choose so early in life.
There are so many things that causes stress, such as traffic, impolite people, fighting with somebody you love, hearing your boss complaints and many other
things.
In my opinion, what mostly causes stress is lack of money. When you are broke, you cannot do almost anything. You cannot go out to enjoy yourself, as going to the movies, go to parties or traveling. You have to stay home and in my case, that causes me a lot of stress.
Moreover, you cannot buy anything and sometimes you cannot even pay your bills. That causes many worries.
If you have money, most of your problems are solved. In conclusion, worries causes stress, and people who have to struggle more in life usually have more stress then those who have an easier life.

Sorry, mom, you are not my superhero anymore!
by Alice Marasca Wiener
When we are children, we think that our parents are “super parents”. They are always right and their opinion is a universal truth. In my case, it was not different. For example, if my parents said that someone was not a good person, in that time, I would not talk to that person anymore. However, today, I have my own opinion. This does not mean that I do not like to hear their advice or their points of view. This means that I respect them as my parents, but I know that they are not the “owners of truth”.

Living alone X living with parents
by João Luis Filho
The reason why I chose to develop this subject is that I am living alone.
In both situations I analyzed that I ask for money and also, I always have support from my parents. But there are for and against points to be considered in both of them.
First, I believe that when we, young people, live at the parents’ house, we did not worry about cooking. On the other hand, I realized if I do not want to get sick I need to cook. And that is another point.
At home, I had the parents to take care of me in whatever situation, be it sickness or something else. Once I am living alone, I have to take care of myself.
One last thing to be considered is that when I lived at my parents’ house, I had to respect their wishes and it was not just a question of honor but an obligation.
Now that I am far from my parents’ eyes, I have a kind of freedom which is different from that one I had at home. I am free to do whatever I want.
In conclusion, there are things we learn by ourselves when we are living alone but also, we know that there is no place like our home –the place where we grew up.
